Work in progress – Dear Electra (Richards)

This is another in John's series of songs based on Greek tragedies. Electra, the daughter of King Agamemnon and Queen Clytemnestra, plotted with her brother, Orestes, to kill her mother in revenge for the murder of her father, who had brought back the prophetess Cassandra as war prize (and lover) on his victorious return from the Trojan War. The fact that he had also had his eldest daughter, Iphigenia, sacrificed may also have rankled with Clytemnestra.

The song tries to unravel Electra's complex psychology.

Bruce wanted to overlay mariachi-style trumpets on the instrumental —

♫  (play sample from John's demo with trumpets and Bruce's bouzouki)

— but John put his foot down, insisting that Mexico isn't in Greece.

♫  (play the same but with whistles)

Ah. Whistles. That's better.
