Shadowfall - Blacksmith
(Traditional/Richards)

Noted down by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1909 from a Mrs Powell, sung to the tune ‘Monk’s Gate’ which is better known as John Bunyan’s ‘He who would valiant be’. It has been recorded many times. The version I first heard was by Shirley Collins on Anthems in Eden. I felt that if we did it we would be honour-bound to replicate Dolly Collin’s beautiful instrumental setting. I therefore decided to take the words and set them to a new tune.
