Ravensdaughter - The Ballad of Thomas Winter
(Doherty/Richards)

'The Ballad of Thomas Winter' was written in the 70s but I can find no record in our archive that it was ever performed in front of an audience. I came across it again a few years ago when I was going through some of our old music and have enjoyed playing it again ever since.

Thomas Winter was one of the main conspirators who, in 1605, attempted to blow up the House of Lords in the famous Gunpowder Plot. It was he who enlisted Guido (Guy) Fawkes when he was travelling in Flanders. I like the story that at one point they got some of the gunpowder wet and came up with the bright idea of drying it by a fire!
