Work in progress – Monk’s Gate

Better known as ‘To be a Pilgrim’ - William Blake’s poem set to a traditional tune. I thought it would be worth looking at for the band when I found out that the tune had been collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams and I was looking for songs with a connection to RVW for our performances at Leith Hill Place where he had lived. He collected the tune in 1904 from a Mrs Harriet Verrall in the village of Monks Gate in Surrey. RVW was working on the English Hymnal and included ‘To be a Pilgrim’ with the tune referenced as ‘Monk’s Gate’. We have performed this at Leith Hill Place but I feel there is still work to be done with it.
