There was a Time - Royal Oak
(Traditional)

A traditional song which I came across in our trusty copy of 'The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs' where the notes indicate that there are several versions and suggest that the action of the song is based on Kempthorne's repulse of the seven Algerine ships on 29th December 1669. The name of 'Royal Oak' appears to have been an accidental inclusion as other versions of the song name the ship as 'The Marigold' and the Captain variously Captain Sir Thomas Merrifield or Captain Michael Mansfield, both of Bristol town.
